Medicinal uses of Bitter Kola (Garcinia)

The study by College of Medical science, University of Calabar,  Nigeria. Department of Anatomy and College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Nigeria,  gave the following report on the usefulness of Bitter Kola,
scientifically called Garcinia  Kola Heckel (Guttiferae)  a common seed in the tropical African communities.
From time, the consumption of this seed has been part of a typical African man’s  delicacy,Partly  as medicine while some just take for the love of it.
The report read in part  as edited by enloghomes. The original copy can be found at bioline.org

The quest for naturally occurring compounds of herbal or plant origin that could be of benefit as contraceptive and fertility control agents, stimulated  interest in the study of  Garcinia kola Heckel (Guttiferae) seeds (‘bitter kola’)  widely consumed as a stimulant
Traditional African medicinal uses according to the study shows that Bitter kola seeds  could be used for the , treatment of cough, purgative, as  anti-parasitic agent, anti-microbial Others are the treatment of diarrhea,  bronchitis and throat infections and liver disorders.  The seed, Garcinia kola enjoys a folk reputation in Africa as a poison antidote   In addition to  the following potentials, the  plant possesses anti-hepatotoxic ability,  antioxidant, hypoglycemic   and aphrodisiac properties  Garcinia kola seeds contain biflavonoid (Kolaviron) capable of having anti-inflammatory properties  the study shown and is a natural antioxidant  . Constituents of the seed of G. kola include  benzophenones, Garciniabiflavonones  and kolaflavonone   Apigenin based flavonoids represent 60% of the total flavonoids present in the diethyl ether fraction of G. kola seeds .  The biological activities of flavonoids include action against allergies, inflammation, free radicals, hepatoxins   The anti-inflammatory properties of G. kola seeds make medical  scientist believed that the  effect of the seed extract  can influence ovulation and the oestrous cycle to assess its contraceptive effects. The importance of the anti-inflammatory property of G. kola is emphasized by evidence that ovulation, an important process in female reproductive function is believed to be an inflammatory process   Ovulation in most mammals are brought about by a luteinising hormone (LH) surge.  The circulating levels of LH begins to rise on a particular period of the day  and reaches peak at a particular period  This rapid surge induces follicular rupture and ovulation.  Ovulation can be blocked experimentally by high doses of antiinflammatory drugs administered before the LH surge  start to rise. This is because once  it rose  may not be brought down by any drug. Bitter kola enjoys God given potential in healing treatment potential.
