BUHARI CHRISTMAS MESSAGE TO NIGERIANS

I felicitate with all Nigerians, especially our Christian brothers and sisters, on the joyous occasion of this year’s Christmas. On this occasion of the commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ, let us all rededicate ourselves to the virtues of peace, love, honesty, justice, equity, piety, humility and service to others which he taught.
There can be no doubt that a greater manifestation of these virtues and ideals in our lives will immensely help us to become a more united, peaceful, secure and progressive nation. Let us also reach out in love and compassion to fellow Nigerians who are in distress at this period of our nation’s history.
I particularly urge you all to remember victims of terrorism and insurgency in the country, especially Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs.
The Federal Government will continue to collaborate with state governments and other stakeholders to ease the harsh conditions in IDP camps, while the ultimate objective remains to quickly put an end to insurgency and return the IDPs to their homes.
We must never again allow any group to hold the nation to ransom under whatever guise. Let us also not allow current socio-economic and security challenges to dampen our expectations for a better Nigeria.
This administration has taken a number of measures to restore hope to our people. The 2016 Budget defines our commitment to giving Nigeria a new lease of life.
Our change slogan is not a campaign gimmick but a promise that must be kept. We are determined to bring about tangible changes in the lives of our people.
In this regard, efforts will be intensified to recover stolen funds, block revenue leakages and enthrone due process, transparency and accountability.
Public office is a public trust that must be held to the highest ethical standards. I wish all Nigerians a Merry Christmas.

FIVE PERSONS LOST THEIR LIVES IN OJI RIVER

Five persons lost their lives early Thursday morning on the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway, as a commuter bus heading towards Enugu plunged into Oji River, near Anambra.

Mr Sunday Ajayi, Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Anambra Command, who confirmed the accident told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), that the incident occurred about 1:25 a.m. on Thursday.

Ajayi said there were 15 passengers in the vehicle, out of which 10 were rescued and taken to hospital, while five were killed in the incident.

The commander said it was a ‘lone accident’ and blamed it on drowsiness of the driver, poor visibility and other dangers associated with night driving.

He urged people who wished to travel to do so during the day time, and set out on time for journey that may stretch into the night.

IPOB DRAGS FG TO COURT.

The Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) has dragged the Federal Government before an Abuja Federal High Court demanding a total of N150 million in damages over the killing of some of its members and injury sustained during a protest in Onitsha, Anambra State.

IPOB, through Kingdom Human Rights Foundation, in its charge number FHC/ABJ/CS/1035/2015, is seeking a declaration of the court condemning as crime against humanity, the shooting of what it said were unarmed, non-violent and peaceful protesters.

An order of the court awarding N100 million damages against the respondents jointly to each of the families of the deceased members of the IPOB who were shot dead and N50 million each to those who sustained gunshot wounds and were grievously injured by a combined team of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies on October 20, 2015 and December 2, 2015 at Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi, Bayelsa, Rivers and Delta states, respectively.

Among other reliefs being sought from the court is for a declaration by the court that the arrest and continued detention of the protesters in unconstitutional illegal, inhuman, brutal and discriminatory, as well as an order granting their unconditional and immediate release.

The applicants in the matter, which include 12 deceased persons, also include 134 injured persons while the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Attorney General of the Federation, the National Assembly, Chief of Army Staff, Inspector General of Police, Commissioners of Police at the respective states, Comptroller General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corp and the Director General of the SSS were all listed as respondents

MORE THAN 16 PERSONS KILLED IN BORNO

Eleven people were killed when three female suicide bombers attacked Benisheik town, in Borno State on Monday, a vigilante source toldSaharaReporters.

Also, the police in Gombe State said three policemen and two civilians were killed during an attack on Triacta Construction Company’s quarters by gunmen in Buba Shango area of Gombe metropolis.

The Gombe State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Fwaje Atajiri, confirmed the attack while speaking with newsmen in Gombe on Monday.

He said the incident occurred on Saturday night and investigation into the matter had commenced.

“For now, we are not going to pre-empt the investigators, we are waiting for them to carry out their duties to a logical conclusion and we will let you know their findings later,” he said.

It was further learnt that the contractors had traveled for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The female suicide bombers, SaharaReporters quoting a vigilante source, killed the 11 people on Sunday night.

He said the attackers comprised three teenage females, who stormed a checkpoint and detonated IEDs they had on them.

The bombers and six villagers were killed, while over 30 others were injured.

“They killed four women and two men as well as the bombers, also the injured persons have been taken to Maiduguri for treatment,.

SHOCKING: DICKSON SHOOT TO DEATH IN BAYELSA

Supporters of the two major contending parties in Saturday’s governorship election in Bayelsa State, the All Progressives Party, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, are currently in a state of fear following the killing of Dieseye Dickson, the Deputy Ward Chairman of APC, Ward 1 in Odi Local Government Area of the state by unidentified gunmen.

It was learnt that the gunmen who were dressed in military uniforms shot Dickson to death in Odi community on Wednesday at about 11pm.

Reacting to the incident, the Director of Media and Publicity of the Sylva/ Igiri campaign Organisation, Chief Nathan Egba claimed that thugs suspected to be working for PDP carried out the killing.

Egba, while describing the killing as wicked, unwarranted and provocative, called on the police and other relevant agencies to ensure they apprehend those behind the killing.

He said, “As at this morning, the corpse of Mr. Dickson, was still lying in a pool of his own blood where he was killed. Do note that this is the second killing being carried out by the PDP since the campaigns started. Recall that Mr. Andrew June, a ward chairman of our party in Ekeremor LGA was hacked to death. We condemned this act of desperation by the PDP to continually attack and intimidate our supporters.”

“This killing is wicked, unwarranted and provocative. The APC and the campaign organization has repeatedly called on the police and other security agencies to step up their patrol to forestall any further attack on the APC members. Killers of these people must not be allowed to go unpunished

PASTOR PARADED STARK NAKED

A mild drama reportedly played out in Orlu, Imo State during the weekend, as a certain pastor believed to be the founder of Holiness of Heaven Ministries, was paraded stark-naked, alongside his accomplice, an alleged ‘juju’ priest.

Reports claim the pastor, until his ugly ordeal, was ‘very powerful’ and performed numerous miracles, ranging from prophesying to healing of the sick.

However, an unnamed woman who according to reports is the pastor’s new wife had allegedly raised the alarm of his fetish association with a very dangerous native doctor within the community.

As the story goes, some irate village youth mobilized and raided the pastor’s church and personal chambers.

It was alleged that a lot of fetish items were discovered.

This consequently led to the burning down of the church and the shrine of the juju priest before the alleged ritualists were paraded around town naked.

NEW ELECTRICITY TARIFF

 The National Electricity Regulation Commission, NERC, on Monday, unveiled a new increment of average of N9.00 electricity tariff for all classes of consumers of the product, which will become effective from the next billing period, just as it also, announced the abolition of the contentious fixed charges for all electricity consumers.

In the new tariff regime for instance, residential customer classification (R2) in Abuja Electricity Distribution Company will no longer pay N702.00 fixed charge every month. Their energy charge will increase by N9.60. Also, residential customers (R2 customers) in Eko and Ikeja electricity distribution areas will no longer pay N750. 00 fixed charges.

They will be getting N10 and N8 increase respectively in their energy charges. Similarly, the burden of N800.00 and N750.00 fixed charges would be lifted off the shoulders of Kaduna and Benin electricity consumers. These consumers will see an increase of N11.05 and N9.26 respectively in their energy charges.

The Commission added, “The new tariff is also good news for commercial consumers For example, commercial customers’ classification C2 in Ibadan and Enugu will no longer pay fixed charges of N17, 010. 00 and N22, 141. 00. Their energy charge will increase by N12.08 and N13.35 respectively.”

The outgoing Chairman of NERC, Dr. Sam Amadi, who unveiled the new tariff in a statement in Abuja, however, descended heavily on the recalcitrant DISCOs, hiding under estimated billing to rip off customers, warning that, “Henceforth every disco should meter all its customers.”

Amadi said, “The metering policy will be strictly enforced. For those willing electricity customers who paid for meters under the Cash Advance Payment Metering Initiative (CAPMI) but are yet to be metered within the allowable 60 days they would no longer be billed by the electricity distribution companies under the new tariff regime.

“The discos will not disconnect them. There is zero tolerance for over billing of customers. An unmetered customer who is disputing his estimated bill would not be expected to pay the disputed bill. He would pay his last undisputed bill as the contested bill go through the dispute resolution process. This is a departure from the old practice which prescribes that customers should first settle the bill while dispute resolution is in process.”

Amadi who said the new electricity tariff regime was approved over the weekend, said, “Henceforth, from the next billing period, distribution companies will no longer charge their customers monthly fixed charges. Fixed charge is that component of the tariff that commits electricity consumers to paying an approved amount of money not minding whether electricity is consumed during the billing period.

“Under the new tariff regime, electricity consumers will now only pay for what they consume from month to month,” Amadi said, adding, “This is good news for electricity consumers who have long asked for a more just and fair pricing of electricity.

“The regulatory commission had promised to address all the complaints against fixed charges through a regulatory process that promotes investments in the electricity industry without unfairly burdening electricity consumers. This is in line with NERC’s mandate to be fair in all its regulatory interventions”.

“Although, the new tariff regimes comes with an increase in energy charges, all electricity consumers (residential as well as commercial) will no longer pay fixed charges, so their total bills will depend on the electricity they actually consume and may be reduced when they conserve electricity. Consumers will no longer be spending money every month to pay for fixed charges even when they do not receive electricity in their homes and business.”

According to the chairman of NERC, “The objective of the new tariff is to enable prudent consumers to save money on electricity bill as they can now control their consumption and not pay monthly fixed charges”.

“In line with the transparent disposition to its operations full details of the new tariff regime would be advertised in major national dailies and Commission website within the next 24 hours.

Besides, this cost saving element, the new tariff regime comes with renewed commitments by the electricity distribution companies (discos) to rapidly improve the quantity and quality of electricity supply. These commitments are contained in service level agreements, which are based on the performance level agreements submitted by the new owners during the bid process.

“The tariff order also encourages the distribution companies to develop new sources of supply within their franchises to increase the quantity and quality of supply to target customers on a willing buyer willing seller basis. These measures are necessary to improve electricity supply across Nigeria and ensure that the distribution companies are working hard to increase investment that will ensure predictable and ultimately reliable and uninterrupted electricity supply in Nigeria.”

“Meanwhile, no electricity distribution company is allowed to connect new customers without metering the customer first. This is to close the wide metering gap of over 50 per cent and reduce high incidence of collection losses in the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

According to the Commission, “the new tariff regime is the result of a transparent, rigorous and credible rate review process. The tariffs will lead to greater reliability in the provision of electricity. More people will progressively have access to the grid, more meters will be deployed and the need for self generation would be gradually reduced.”

The Commission expects the electricity distribution companies to provide better customer service in all aspects of their operations and would hold the electricity distribution companies responsible for their service level agreements.

COOK RESPOND TO QUESTION ON APPLE PRODUCT

It comes as a matter of important to note that to every investment there are some level of risk involved. “If the government lays a proper warrant on us today, then we will give the specific information that is requested, because we have to by law. In the case of encrypted information, we don’t have it to give,” Cook said.

“I don’t believe the trade-off here is privacy versus national security,” he added later.

“It’s skill,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in response to a question on “60 Minutes” Sunday from Charlie Rose as to why the company’s products are made in China.

Earlier in the interview, the conversation heated up just a bit when the subject turned to allegations that Apple  is a “tax avoider” and is “engaged in a sophisticated scheme” to shelter the $74 billion in revenue parked overseas.

“That is total political crap,” Cook fired back. He said he’d “love to bring it home” but doesn't because “it would cost me 40%... and I don’t think that’s a reasonable thing to do. This is a tax code, Charlie, that was made for the industrial age, not the digital age. It’s backwards. It’s awful for America. It should have been fixed many years ago. It’s past time to get it done.”

Cook also defended the company on the thorny issue of encryption, showed off Apple’s future headquarters and, again, talked about why he came out of the closet.

The show didn't reveal much in the way of headline-making news, like sales data on the Apple Watch or the outlook for driverless cars. The world’s most valuable company — and also one of its most secretive — knows how to control the message. 

“They don’t put the story out there until they have decided it IS the story they want to tell,” he said.

While fans surely enjoyed the view from the inside, others were unimpressed.

As part of their determined efforts to rid the society of all known Boko Haram terrorists enclaves and hideouts, troops of 25 Task Force Brigade, based on tip off, conducted a fighting patrol along Damboa-Njaba-Bale road in Borno State.

The troops encountered and killed 3 suspected Boko Haram terrorists that had been terrorizing the communities around Sabon Gari and Damboa.

Among those killed was the Boko Haram terrorists Ameer (Leader) in Bulayaga. The Ameer was notorious in terrorizing Bale, Wass and Mufurundi villages. see more after the cut.

The troops recovered an AK-47 rifle with its magazine, 43 rounds of 7.62mm Special Ammunition, 1 Grinding Machine and 5 Dane Guns. Other items recovered include 7 Motorcycles,21 bags of grains and 2 Boko Haram terrorists flags hoisted.

In a related development, troops of 7 Division Garrison on patrol at Mainari village in Mafa Local Government Area had an encounter with Boko Haram terrorists.

The encounter led to the killing of 9 terrorists and recovery of weapons, which include 4 AK-47 and 1 Pump Action Gun.

The patrol teams have continued to dominate the respective areas.

TRAIN CRUSHED DRIVERS TO DEATH

Two drivers who were on queue at a filling station in Ilorin, Kwara State, were on Sunday crushed to death by a train.

The incident occurred at a rail line around Sango area of the metropolis.

It was gathered that the moving train crushed the two drivers while they were inside the cabs parked on the rail line.

An eye witness said that the two drivers were crushed inside the vehicle while people at the filling station watched helplessly.
